Mona Vale restoration ‘sentimental’ for Gough „„ By Caitlin Miles TEN YEARS ago Jamie Gough held his 21st celebrations at Mona Vale Homestead and his mother, Helen, donated a park bench in his name. Yesterday, the city councillor was back to cut the ribbon, for the opening of the historic building. Originally built in 1899, the homestead had to be restored after the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes, severely damaged it. The link to the homestead goes
as far back as Cr Gough’s greatgrandfather. Tracy Thomas Gough, purchased the property in the 1930s and later sold it. He added the guest house at the west entrance and offered it free of charge to the city council as a place of residence for visiting dignitaries. Cr Gough’s parents got engaged and had their wedding reception at the homestead, while earlier this year Cr Gough had his wedding photos taken in the grounds. With a long-standing family connection to the property, Cr
Gough said it was a “sentimental� day. “It was very special to open my great-grandfather’s home. I think if he had been here today he would have been pretty chuffed,’’ he said. Restoration work was carried out on the fernery, bathhouse, and lodge as part of the $2.8 million project. Different parts of the grounds and buildings have been completed at various times, with the homestead being the second to last part of the project to be completed. The gatehouse is still being restored.

Bus route winners, losers
By Georgia O’Connor-Harding FRUSTRATED Greycliffe St residents will no longer have to put up with buses driving through their quiet street. But the burden has now been passed onto residents on Murphys Rd instead. The Greater Christchurch Public Transport Committee on Wednesday to approved an extension of the Orange Line bus service through the residential area of Murphys Rd. In September Western News reported the buses were a contentious issue with Greycliffe St residents who did not want buses travelling along their quiet residential street. Environment Canterbury asked for public feedback on the proposed Orange Line extension. Documents show a battle between Greycliffe St and Murphy Rd residents to keep the buses off their respective streets. Out of 134 submissions made, 51 per cent voted for the bus to go through Murphys Rd while
NOISY: Residents on Greycliffe St will no longer need to put up with buses going through their street, but the burden has instead been passed onto Murphys Rd residents. 45 per cent voted for the bus to go through Greycliffe St. Two per cent voted neither option. Therefore Murphys Rd will have the extended bus route through their street. The route is via Patterson Tce, Alvaston Drive, Caulfield Ave through to Richmond Ave. Concerns raised from the submissions included buses speed-
ing along Murphys Rd which is 70km/h, the drop in value of properties, and the buses creating noise. Greycliffe St resident Helen Smith, who lives near where it intersects with Murphys Rd, said she felt sorry for Murphys Rd residents. She said she thought the project was handled badly.
Mrs Smith said her family will be moving out of the area due to the buses still being nearby and plans showing a bus stop is likely to be placed near her house with the new route. Originally the buses were planned to go along Hamill Rd onto Caulfield Ave and Richmond Ave. But buses could not turn properly on the corner of Hamill Rd and Caulfield Ave, which is the retail area of Longhurst. In 2014, a temporary route was created for the Orange Line because roads in the subdivision were not completed. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton community board member Ross McFarlane said it was a “no-win” situation as people who bought houses on the street never envisaged buses to be near their homes. •HAVE YOUR SAY: Are you concerned about Orange Line buses going past your house? Ballet students perform with professionals By Georgia O’Connor-Harding FORTY DANCERS from a Sockburn ballet school were selected to perform with the Imperial Russian Ballet Company last weekend. Dancers from the Sharon Howells School of Ballet were on stage at the Isaac Theatre Royal in various roles as mice, horse riders, angels and gnomes. In the spirit of the festive season, the pupils aged 6-13 years and the Russian ballet company presented the Christmas story of The Nutcracker. Director Sharon Howells said her pupils were “very busy little bees” leading up to the show. She said the students had just one rehearsal before they performed on stage with the
Russian ballet company. “It was wonderful. The kids were really good off stage and on stage. When you are in something like that you have to learn to adapt very fast. So the learning kerb was enormous for these children,” she said. She described The Nutcracker

In Brief PARKING RESTRICTIONS Parking restrictions are likely to be installed outside the former St Nicholas Care Home site. The restrictions would be placed along Kirkwood Ave, between Clyde Rd and the old St Nicholas Care Home site. The former hospital has been turned into Canterbury University student accommodation. The HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board has put in a request to council staff to report back on the parking restrictions. It was to address residents’ concerns on the conversion of the care home into a student hostel. In February, 74 students will move in to the site for the academic year. LIQUOR STORE HEARING A hearing will be held after Riccarton residents raised concerns about the establishment of a new off-licence liquor store on 76 Riccarton Rd, next to the Ministry of Social Development’s Work and Income New Zealand. The application lodged by PM Liquors Ltd has been opposed by residents, the medical officer of health and police. Western News reported in October residents were concerned about the number of liquor outlets based along Riccarton Rd and the close proximity to WINZ. Olympic gymnast returns home Courtney McGregor, 18, caught the nation’s attention at the Rio Olympics. Fraser Walker-Pearce talked to the gymnast about how she found out she had been selected for Rio, the United States college system and what it’s like to be back home in Halswell again Hi Courtney, you’ve had an incredible year. What was it like competing at the Olympics? The Olympics was amazing. It was a lot of hard work to get there in the first place and I just hoped I’d be there. So to get on the team was amazing. We were aiming for top 16 and I managed 13th and had no major mistakes so that was pretty awesome. How long has it been a dream for you to compete at the Olympics? Oh wow, for a long time. Definitely from a really young age, from maybe six or seven. I always thought I’d go to the Olympics, I always just assumed I’d go as kids do. I figured out as time went on that it was a little harder than I initially thought it was. And when did you actually think it was possible that you could become an Olympic athlete? I think it was at the 2015 worlds’ competition. I did better than anyone thought. I think probably after that test event, I had to get a certain all-round score and when I got that I thought that it could be a possibility, but I still had to get a lot checked off. I still remember the call we got from the GymSport New Zealand chief executive officer; he told us we weren’t allowed to tell anyone and we had to Facetime (video call) him to find out whether I was in or out. He called my mum and I, and he told us I was going. I was only allowed to tell immediate family and it was at least three or four days walking around telling my school mates that I didn’t know yet before I could tell people. That must have been hard! What happened after you were
selected for the team? I got flown up to Auckland where they announced the gymnastics team, all of us were announced. There was a lot of media there that day and we must have each told our life story about 10 times. Talking to other Christchurch gymnasts, they were all excited to hear you were on your way back from college in the United States. How do you handle being a role model for younger gymnasts? It’s pretty cool I think, and kind of surreal. I went into the Christchurch School of Gymnastics and all the wee kids were all excited and happy to see me which was cool. Then I went over to Olympia (Gymnastic Sports) to see a friend who is a coach there and I saw her little girls and they were all excited as well. You’re at home at the moment, but when that’s finished you’ll head back to the United States? Yes. At the moment I’m based over at Boise State University in the US on a gymnastics scholarship. So that starts back up in January, so I’ll be heading back over there soon. What are the big competitions you’ll be looking forward to in both college and New Zealand next year? Next year there is the 2017 worlds in Montreal, Canada, which is kind of close to where I am. And also the Commonwealth Games in 2018. But I think that might interfere with some of the college events. So you might miss the Commonwealth Games? That’s a bit annoying? It’s just that it coincides with the college gymnastics season.

They always have regionals and nationals and that kind of thing at the end of their season so it might clash. What was seeing younger gymnasts at your old club like? It was pretty special. It’s kind of crazy that I now inspire the younger kids when I was in their shoes a few years ago. Some clubs haven’t had the most successful
events recently, but they’ve got good programmes in place and I think they’ll be doing fine soon. Tell me a bit about some of the young kids’ reactions to seeing you? Some were really shy when they came up, but some were really confident. So it was quite funny seeing their reactions and quite cool that they look up to

me. And are you studying a subject over at Boise State as well? Yes, I’m doing a lot of studying on general things, but I’m also doing health science. The set up is kind of different over there as compared to in New Zealand. So are you aiming to become a doctor or a surgeon or something like that? I’m not 100 per cent sure yet, but I might want to be a doctor. There’s so many schools over here I really don’t know which ones are the best for studying to be a doctor. In terms of your scholarship, what does that cover for you? It’s a full scholarship for all schooling, housing and everything. It’s pretty good to be honest. What school did you attend when you were in Christchurch? I was at Villa Maria College for most of it and I did correspondence for the last couple. I think that school is more important than gymnastics, as it was my top priority and correspondence allowed me to get on with my work and then I had time to do gym after. It just cut out all of the assemblies and hour-long lunch times and that kind of thing – it really worked for me. Did you get to meet quite a few famous people while you were over in Rio and at college? Yes definitely. Even in Rio I got to meet all the final five gymnasts and Simone Biles (all-round vault and floor gold medallist from the US) and everyone like that and I get to see them sometimes, because most of them are in college gymnastics now. When we were in Rio we trained with them all, we were in the same part of the Olympic Village as the American team which was great. Do you keep in touch with a few of them? Yes, we talk over social media sometimes which is nice.

Community garden to host festive dinner
By Fleur Mealing THIS YEAR the Riccarton West Community Garden will spread Christmas cheer through a shared festive dinner. The vision of garden management members Loretta and Nick Te Paa, is about
helping their community come together during the holiday season. Around 100 people have been invited to the event. Each invitation was hand delivered by Mr Te Paa along with a parcel of vegetables from the garden.
Since 2013 the community garden on Peverel St had supplied vegetables to the elderly and families in need in the community. The group works in association with Oak Development Trust which is managed by Carol Renouf.
Mrs Renouf said the idea was “absolutely fantastic”. “We will celebrate Christmas together as a community.” The meal will be a chance to put a spotlight on the value of the community garden and its volunteers.
The land where they grow the vegetables has been loaned by Housing New Zealand on a year to year basis. The dinner on December 9 will feature a range of fruit and vegetables grown in the garden as well as a ham donated by Countdown.
Business owners laud Hornby By Gabrielle Stuart and Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE HORNBY area was once considered low-end – but now business owners say they would rather be based there than in places like Merivale or the central city. Kelvin Yang opened his Cheeky Sparrow café in newly expanded The Hub Hornby mall a month ago. It is one of many businesses which have relocated to the south-west of the city since the earthquakes, and a new report by data and economic analysis company Infometrics has predicted the boom will continue. It predicts the number of people living between Halswell and Darfield will grow 85 per cent by 2023, making it the third-fastest growing region in the country. Mr Yang said he was tossing up between opening in Merivale, the inner city or the Hornby area. He chose Hornby because it was a better place for a new business to build a loyal customer base, he said. “Being a new brand competing with established brands in Merivale is hard. But in a newer area as a more recently established brand, if it is locally owned and good quality, people like that and they will give it a go,” he said. He said the rents were pretty similar when comparing the three locations, so that was not much of a factor.

Current listings on Trade Me for retail sites include a 178 sq m space at Cathedral Junction for $60,000 per year, a 239 sq m site off Main South Rd in Hornby for just under $60,000, and a 188 sq m shop in Fendalton village for $66,000. SmartyPants children’s clothing shop owner Sarah Schaap also chose to base her business in the west side of the city, over other areas. Her shop is currently based
on Nottingham Ave in Halswell, and she plans to move to Wigram early next year. She considered Papanui or Merivale when searching for a new shop, but said the traffic issues in the area put her off. Wigram was easily accessible, was drawing growing numbers of young families and was a strong community, she said. “There’s quite a nice community type feeling, so I’m keen to be there. focused type place, where people want to shop locally, they don’t want to go to a mall,” she said. The report singled out Halswell and Wigram as areas where there was likely to be a lot of commercial growth, because of “unexpected” population growth. It predicted Wigram would need a high school soon, as well as more services and commercial spaces in the wider area. “Over the longer-term, de-
velopment along Springs Rd is likely to see Prebbleton, in particular, become more and more like a suburb of Christchurch,” it predicted. Halswell Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn said the growth was not unexpected, but had happened faster than expected. “I think the subdivisions where there is a lot of high density is great, but they really need to be backed up with places where people can work and shop and we are lacking that, and we have enormous traffic problems,” she said. Hornby Quadrant development manager Kevin Arthur said there had been huge demand for commercial sites in the development, which runs between Main South Rd and Springs Rd. But although it was driven by demand, a lot of the growth was due to the sped-up consenting process which made expanding west much easier, he said. “We were eyeing Hornby for 10 years plus prior to the earthquakes, but to get planning consent for industrial development takes an awfully long time. Halswell make final of one-day knockout cup HALSWELL WILL face off against Hornby in the final of the Chairman’s Cup knockout one-day cricket competition on Waitangi weekend after beating Merivale Papanui at Edgar MacIntosh Park on Sunday. Merivale Papanui batted first, finishing on 169/8 from 40 overs. Hunter Rowe (2-20) and Leighton Johnston (2-43) were the best of the Halswell bowlers. Steve Golding then starred for Halswell with the bat; his 71 not out
guiding his team to 170/5. The result was contrasted by the previous day when Halswell lost its Skilton Trophy one-day match against Sumner at St Leonards Park. Halswell batted first after winning the toss and got off to a solid start, reaching 40/1 after 13 overs, but then lost three wickets for 10 runs to be 50/4. Blair Cotching then hit three sixes and a four in a quick 22 but, when he got out, Halswell lost another three wickets for five runs to be 86/7.
BIG DEFENCE: The Riccarton Knights won the Queenstown Nines Carnival in dramatic fashion at the weekend, with extra time required. After making their way through pool the Knights ran into the Hornby Panthers in the semi-final. The Knights 13-4 victory more than made up for the heartbreak of 2015 which saw they fall to the Panthers in the tournament final. The Knights met the East Coast Eagles in the tournament final after the Eagles accounted for the Linwood Keas 26-13 in the other semi-final. The tournament final was a nail-biter. With the scores locked at 8-8 at full time the tournament would be decided by a golden point try. The Knights held their nerve to win 12-8 in extra time and in the process captured their first Queenstown Nine title.

NATIONAL STAGE: Christchurch Boys’ High School head to Auckland this week for the Condor Sevens tournament. The current UC Championship title holders qualified for the countries national secondary school sevens tournament after making it to the final of the regional sevens competition at Hoon Hay Park earlier this month. They will joined by Timaru Boys’ High School who qualified as the second Canterbury school. The three day tournament begins on Friday at Sacred heart College. Pupils benefit from new sports field donation WHARENUI, RICCARTON and Hornby Primary Schools are three of 11 primary schools in Canterbury to have been gifted new sports turfs. SKY Television has gifted the turfs to schools that lost or incurred significant damage to playing fields in the earthquakes. Worth almost $20,000 each, the turfs are part of the company’s $1 million, fiveyear commitment to help repair the city. SKY director of corporate communication Kirsty Way said the turfs would make a big difference to the schools. “It is very important for children to be active and outdoors and Sport Canterbury can use these turfs to help develop new programmes to increase sports participation,” she said. Sport Canterbury chief executive Julyan
Falloon said the donation will allow his organisation to deliver new activities to the mostly low-decile schools. “A number of schools lost their outdoor play areas in the earthquakes. In addition, population shifts meant some schools saw their decile rating change, which meant they lost funding, while others had an influx of pupils, resulting in new buildings taking up space on the playing fields,” said Falloon. The other schools which received turfs were Linwood North, South New Brighton, Northcote, Waltham, Bishopdale, Papanui, Rolleston and Kaiapoi Borough. SKY’s $1 million commitment to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust saw it give $200,000 to repair Garrick Park, Woolston, in 2013.

Fire Service staff remain in quake recovery mode Fire risk management officer Mark Thomas talks about the Fire Service’s duties in Kaikoura and Waiau, as well as some incidents in the city It’s certainly very different this time. Christchurch city is back to normal and, for most people, it’s business as usual. But Waiau and Kaikoura are definitely part of our fire region and we have a considerable number of staff on the ground up there. Our Regional Control Centre remains open and operating and local staff are picking up heaps of overtime to cover the absence of those working on the earthquake. So it’s a matter of juggling normal work and quake work for those of us doing both. The up-side is that Christchurch has not had a terribly busy week. Car crashes were quite high, however, including one at Ferry
Rd and Ensors Rd on Sunday evening, in which 11 people were hurt, nine requiring transport to hospital. As usual, animal rescues became our responsibility with a cat stuck in a fence in Waltham last Friday and a dog stuck down a cliff in Dyers Pass Rd on Monday. In both cases, firefighters were rewarded for their efforts by the victims immediately bolting once back on flat ground. Ungrateful, but not unexpected, I suppose. A classic kitchen fire was averted by luck in Sydenham on Saturday, when a shift worker returned home very late, put food on to cook and promptly fell asleep on the couch. A smoke alarm did its job and only smoke damage occurred. Without the smoke alarm? Well who knows? Tired or tiddly going home to cook is not recommended. Indulge yourself, buy takeaways.
Templeton golf course plan Hornby city councillor Jimmy Chen writes about the recent independent hearings panel decision regarding Fulton Hogan quarrying at the Templeton golf course I would like to take this opportunity to share with you an update regarding Hornby Ward residents’ concerns about the Templeton golf course becoming a new quarry and an old Fulton Hogan (FH) quarry site being used for a new golf course. The city council has received decisions from the independent hearings panel on the following matters to replace some of the provisions of the Christchurch City District Plan and the Banks Peninsula District Plan. Decision 34: Chapter 17 – Rural – Stage 2 (and relevant definition and associated planning maps). . Decision 35: Chapter 18 – Open space – Stage 2 and 3 (and relevant definitions) Both the open space (decision 35) and rural (decision 34) decisions contain commentary and district plan policies and rules which would enable (1) a new golf course on the old quarry site; and
(2) a new quarry on the existing golf course site. That new zoning (or zone swap) can only occur if the following three conditions are met before December 31, 2021, when Fulton Hogan seeks and gains approval for a reserve exchange under the Reserve Act; Fulton Hogan obtains resource consent to clear the existing significant indigenous vegetation on the golf course
site and, finally, Fulton Hogan or Templeton Golf Club deliver an executed contract to build a new international standard golf course and other facilities on the quarry site. If those conditions are met and the new zoning takes effect, Fulton Hogan still requires resource consent for the new quarry. This is to ensure firstly, a bond is entered into between Fulton Hogan, the golf course and city council to ensure completion of the golf course. Creative wrapping adds intrigue to gifts Most of the malls offer a free gift-wrapping service, which is a great help at this busy time, but for those who prefer to wrap their own here are a few ideas to make gifts look unique and exciting.
The first tip to make the job easier and the wrapping look more professional is to do the task on a flat surface – a table or a hard floor. Recycling has become an important aspect of modern-day life, and that’s easy to do with gift-wrapping. For example, those brown paper bags you have put aside are ideal, especially for odd-shaped gifts. To give them a Christmassy look, you could glue on those left-over pieces of wrapping paper from last year that are too small to use, and add a candy cane or chocolate with the gift tag. Another quirky idea is to wrap your gifts in fabric. You could cut up a garment you no longer wear, or look out those left over pieces from curtains or clothing you have made. Tie them up with fabric ribbon to complete the look.
Using newspaper or cardboard boxes as wrapping is another recycling idea, and you could add a festive look by tying them with Christmas ribbon. For long-shaped gifts, why not wrap them to look like a Christmas cracker. Place a tube of cardboard around the item, then put it inside a sheet of wrapping paper, secure it with tape then scrunch up the ends like a cracker and tie them off with coloured ribbon. Kitchen foil is another wrapping option. Being silver and shiny it already has a festive look, which you could enhance with bright-coloured ribbon. Make a container, such as a jar, tin or tray one part of the gift. Complete it with chocolates, nuts or biscuits and wrap the gift in clear cellophane tied with brightcoloured ribbon.
